Animal Control Solves Wildlife Issues

If you are experiencing issues with troublesome wild animals, you may be unsure of what action to take.  Most city authorities fail to provide any real way out unless a person’s security is endangered.  Because any new development in America goes on trespassing onto forest spaces, issues will continue coming up because of the displacement of wildlife.

One of the most common animals which homeowners have problems with are opossums.  It’s not really a charming creature and it will growl and hiss like a cat when cornered or frightened.  Opossums are nocturnal, meaning they are active at night. Rarely will you see an opossum when it is bright.  Before you have a go at opossum removal at your residence, consider the following information:

General Opossum Facts

Opossums resemble large-sized rats to some people, but actually they are the only marsupials indigenous to North America.  A marsupial is a type of mammal that totes their babies around in a pouch on their stomach.  As the young ones reach 1 to 2 months of age, they are carried by their mother on her back.

Opossums have a very small amount of hair on their tails and ears and the tail is able to carry the weight of the animal for rather long periods.  The hair on the remaining portions of their body is very rough.  Opossums also have fifty teeth, which is a lot more as compared to any other mammal in North America. Opossums are omnivorous and will eat almost anything they can find.  Most people come across opossums in their garbage or near remnants of pet food.

Opossums are actually very reticent creatures and will “pretend to be dead” when they are in fear for their lives.  This can continue for a short timeor for as much as 2 hours, and it’s usually good enough to save the opossum from any moredanger.  However, it can be quite startling to see a presumably dead opossum unexpectedly flip over and saunter off!

Annoying Issues

Opossums are drawn to urban areas to look for food and shelter.  Very often, they take up residence in the spaces below balconies andterraces, or inside sheds or  garages.  While they are not usually vicious, they could be bothersome.  Opossums are usually full of fleas, mites, ticks and lice, which can be transmitted onto humans as well as household pets.  This often happens when the opossum’s home is full of these pests.  There is also always a likelihood of getting bitten if you try to trap this creature.  This includes a threat to your household pets too.

Opossum Removal and Prevention

Opossum removal should be done by an experienced professional.  However, there are some prevention methods that are sure to reduce the possibility of an opossum making your property their nesting place.  Always  remove all left over pet food after your is done eating.  You also need to  put lids tightly on your trash cans.  This will stop luring opossums to your property.  It’s also recommended that you remove any brush piles or litter that may havemounted up in your garden.  These kinds of places are often used for building an opossum’s nest.

Opossum removal is often done by trapping the offending animal; keep in mind though, if the creature is very difficult to ensnare, it maybe necessary to employ other means.  While there are opossum repellants available, these are not yet proven to work.  It’s best to use an experienced opossum removal service instead of attempting to deal with the animal yourself.
